Gateway to Technology - Design and Modeling Syllabus
Gateway To Technology (GTT) Design and Modeling is a 9-week course from Project Lead the Way
used nationwide in middle schools as part of their pre-engineering
. The Design and Modeling Unit uses (Computer Assisted Drafting) to introduce students to the design process. Utilizing this design process, students will learn how technologies influence their daily lives. Students also learn sketching/drafting techniques, as a component of design, measurement, and modeling using both paper and CAD software. Using these techniques, students create physical prototype models and documentation to solve real world engineering and technical problems. Safety will be emphasized along with an awareness of how through a systematic process of design, modeling, and fabrication on real hand and power tools products can be built to fulfill societal demands. Big Ideas and Activities for GTT Design and Modeling in 2011-2012
Lesson 1 Introduction to Technology – Students investigate
and determine their societal, cultural, economic, political, and environmental consequences.
Lesson 2 Design Process – In a series of activities students will explore, document, and learn the elements of design processes. Students learn through application the importance of accurate measurement techniques in good design.
Lesson 3 Sketching and Views – Students will explore
through variety of perspective drawing techniques including thumbnail sketch, isometric, one point/two point horizon, and orthographic multiview.
Lesson 4 3-D Computer Modeling – Students will transition into the
CAD modeling software utilizing the design process, measurement, sketching, views, and 3D geometry to render physical objects on the computer.
Lesson 5 Prototype Fabrication – Using the knowledge gained from previous lessons students will design, draw, fabricate, and assemble actual models of the following projects: a catapult launched air cushion racer, a magnetic levitation vehicle, and a compressed air dragster.
Grades will be determined by participation in daily class work, activities, and occasional homework assignments, but most of the grade will be based on demonstrated mastery of the subject on daily classwork assessments. A wide variety of extra credit and enrichment activities are available giving students ample opportunities to improve grades reduced by absence/illness or merely to pursue additional optional enrichment. Homework will be assigned 1-2 times a week and due dates will be indicated on the assignment. Late work may be subject to a 15% reduction in possible points and will not be accepted within one week of progress report/report card cut-off dates.
